Mt Robert Fell Run results 16th February 2025
After a week of hot dry days an overcast day promised improved times for many of the returning competitors at the Mt Robert Fell run on Sunday. However conditions underfoot on the steep descent down Paddy’s Track were like small ball-bearings and this slowed most runners down. Matthew Moloney won last year in a time of 1.31.02 and hoped to break the magic 1.30 mark. He was a minute ahead of last year’s time at the top of the Pinchgut but lost time on the descent to finish in 1.33.09. Tony Phillips ran 1.40.19 for second place while Curtis Moore finished in a dead heat with Paula Canning to take out 3rd place and 1st VM40.
Matt Ellery finished close behind in 1.54.57 in his first time in this event, winning the VM50 grade.
Paula did pull back a minute on her time last year, finishing as the first woman in 1.52.24 and of course winning the VW50 grade. Catherine Delaporte was second and Chloe Quilliam in her first appearance was 3rd.
Husband and wife team Graeme and Christine Lear took out the VM70 and VM 60 titles in 2.30.45.
Adding to his long string of endurance achievements Mike Ward has established a new VM80 grade and at 82 is now the oldest runner to have completed the event. Mike helped craft the women’s trophy first won by Lyn Moore in 1993.
Only two runners have ever broken the 1.30 barrier. Murray Chapman ran an amazing 1.23.04 in 1991 and followed it up the next year with 1.25.40. I am told he is still running around his Marlborough sheep farm! Angus Wood won the event in 1995 in 1.28.45.
