REGISTRATIONS ARE OPEN FOR NEW ATHLETES WANTING TO JOIN NELSON CHILDREN’S ATHLETICS
IMPORTANT INFORMATION –
The start of the 2019/2020 Season is just around the corner.
As some of you may have heard, during the last few months, that work has started on renewing the Saxton Field Athletic Track. The work started on 31st July, so whilst work is being done the area will be closed. The work is expected to be completed by Mid November, which is very much subject to the weather.
Because of the work being done we need to start our Athletics Season at a different venue. For this reason Nelson Children’s Athletics and Athletics Richmond have decided that until we can use the New Saxton Field Athletics Track, we will combine forces.
Our first Combined Club Night will be on Tuesday 15th of October 2019 at Broadgreen Intermediate on Nayland Road, up on the back field. With a start time of 5.15 pm – 7pm.
We will be returning to the Saxton Field Athletics Track around the 14th of November (weather permitting). Once we can return our Nelson Children’s Athletics Club Night’s will return to a Thursday night, from 5.15pm – 7pm for the remander of the season.
Being involved in athletics will not only make you a better athlete but will assist your ability in other sports by helping you run faster, jump higher and throw further.
Athletics Nelson Children’s Track & Field Club nights are for 7 – 15 year olds and are held on Thursday evenings at the Saxton Field Athletic Track during Term 4 and Term 1 from 5.30 pm till 7 pm.
Our club nights are a friendly, fun night with a mixture of track & field.
We are a parent run children’s club & it is expected that all parents of athletes are able to help out regularly.
On Club nights a combination of disciplines will be rotated for 7 – 15 year olds. These will be a combination of skills and competition.
7, 8 and 9 year old Athletes compete in the field events of Long Jump, Shot Put and Discus and in the track events of 60 m, 100 m, and 200 m.
10 to 15 year old Athletes add High Jump, 400 m, 800 m and 1500 m to their programme. 12 – 15 year olds Athletes can compete in Hurdles and Race-walk.
Inter-club competition is a fantastic way for Children to develop new friendships, foster team spirit and represent the club while improving personal bests.
All Inter-club meets are held on a Sunday and generally begin at 10.00 am and are finished by 4.30 pm.
The Russell Cup, Winstone Cup and Hester Shield are Inter-club Meetings attended by Nelson, Richmond, Motueka, Takaka and Marlborough Clubs. See this year’s dates on the Summer Track page.

Nelson Children’s Athletic’s relies heavily on Parent Help at every Club Night and Inter-Clubs. Without having parent help we are unable to successfully run safe and enjoyable Club Night, which involves coaching and training for your children, and Inter-Clubs.
It is compulsory for a parent to be present at every Club Night for Health and Safety reasons. (1 parent per family). You will be required to sign in with your child. Please note this is not a roll call and we are not responsible for your child.
Please don’t be shy, come forward, a lot of the jobs available are very basic, like raking the long jump pit, holding a measuring tape, rolling back the shot put or discus, walking around with an age group to there different stations and recording measurements and/or times, track timing on a stop watch and replacing the high jump bar. By helping out and being involved it will give you great satisfaction in watching your child improve, set new Personal Bests and achieve their goals. There is an added benefit for yourself that you will understand and learn a lot more the techniques being taught. Therefore you will feel more confident in putting your hand forward for Parent Help at the local club meets.
